The Future Looks Bleak

Okay, so…looking now at the EMail I didn’t actually read hitherto, it’s starting to look like I may have misunderstood something about the theme. Which in retrospect could explain why everyone kept screaming at me to ‘put the dumb fucking penguins back in the car and get over here’ all night. It could even account for the nonplussed reaction to both the IMAX film on Galapagos and the PowerPoint presentation meant to predict changes to herd immunity throughout the Greater Ecuadorian Area.

You know what? Let’s not dwell on the past. It was an honest mistake—one which I think we can all agree could have been made by anyone.

Apparently, the theme was supposed to have been about breast cancer awareness. Which you should be aware of. Because it can strike at any time. And it often lures the young and the stupid with promises of candy or trips to see Santa Claus. And I really only skimmed the EMail; I’m kinda guessing here, a little.

Look: I’m tired, and I’m just not up to heavy research at the moment. Especially after all those weeks wasted on that stupid bird thing. I hope they all die.

Not that they’re necessaily all the rest; there’s no guessing what’s out there in various phonecams [and probably all over facebook.com by now], but that’s the set from Peter’s DigiCam [which is actually better than my prehistoric Sony] now that at least one of us has remembered his UserPass data for the server.

They don’t make’em like they used to.

Of course, if you’ve got phonecam shots from the show [or, really, from any show], you can get them to us for inclusion into the site here. Go ahead and EMail them to CEI@DenverRockyHorror.com, and we’ll find a place for them.

First, there’s this historically standing rule that, if you’re at the show, you’re probably on the website. Then there’s an additional, subsequent allowance that, if you’re at the show and shouldn’t be, I can avoid uploading shots of you to the site, so long as I hear about it in advance, because, historically, I was the only one getting shots of anything. Then that’s convoluted by everyone on the planet, currently, having at least a phonecam and an account at facebook.com, rendering everything kinda meaningless.

Still, if someone’s not supposed to leave a trail of evidence of having been at the show, I can make an effort personally to limit at least the shots I’d got of him.

So let’s add a complication. My computer puked hard recently. Hard enough in fact that talking to it, reasoning with it, threatening it, and using words like apple at it made no difference; what made a slight difference, if not immediately, was giving up and replacing it. Which gives me a neat new computer running 64Bit Windoze7 on a quadcore somethingorother but, for the immediate future, no access to terabytes of drives and their contents; in a real way, I’m currently limited to whatever percentage of eighty gigs isn’t already lost to the operating system; that doesn’t leave massive oodles of room for Photoshop and LightWave and everything else I expect to use every five minutes for various things.

So now I’ve got a bunch of images from July, some including people who shouldn’t be included, and no good way to spend whatever amount of time editing each image to exclude people who should be excluded.

Somewhere in there, I’ve been slammed with unrelated stuff for the last few days. And there’s kinda no end in sight for all that. So, for the moment at least, I’ve just gone through the images I’d got on Friday, held back the ones containing things you’re not allowed to see, and uploaded the rest. Maybe that’s good enough. If not, I can look into doing things correctly once I’ve got time and space and Photoshop and so on.

Of course, that’s just my stuff [some of it kinda sucks, since I was making a realtime effort to exclude people InCam]; somewhere out there, there are other images from other DigiCams which I haven’t seen yet, probably including shots of people we’re not supposed to be including; whenever I see those, if I don’t have to remove people, if I’ve got Photoshop up and running at the time…at some point, those’ll probably be here too. One way or another.

On the bright side, staggering things like this kinda gives the site more of a reason to exist apart from the end of every month; otherwise, while we could have midmonth posts counting down to the next show, that’s about all they’d be as of now. I’ve actually been thinking a bit about expanding the site’s purpose and having more updates than the twelve per year you can currently expect; so far, that’s purely about thinking, so there’s not much more to say about it yet.

Discovering last month that my new phone, cool though it is, kinda sucks at getting video, I went back to the Mino. That also kinda sucks in minimal lighting, but the quality’s a bit better. Also, I killed my computer and kicked up to 64bit Windoze7 a couple days ago; I’m reinstalling stuff, but I haven’t got the videocompression software into the system yet. So I’m cheating and just throwing this up to YouTube.com. Presuming I’m not violating their rules. Either way, if you’re looking at this on an iPhone, you may need to report yourself to Steve Jobs; no porn allowed, whatever that might constitute.

I dragged Hunter along [she's the one in the first video, telling me to get my own coffee; also, she's fired] to get a few shots with my DigiCam. Not that she stopped at a few. So those should be here on the site soonish; first, I have to finish uploading this stuff to YouTube.com since, of all the USB ports I coulda used, I jammed the Mino into the one next to the MemoryStick reader, preventing me from using both at the same time. It’ll all get done eventually.

But, enough about that; how you doin’….

So, if you look out the right side of the website, you may catch a glimpse of a couple widgets down there. Strangely enough, there are way more people connected to us through facebook.com than through twitter.com. Partly because facebook.com’s more popular [than any other site in the history of ever]; partly because…who knows. So. While you’re here and thinking about it, hit twitter.com/DenverRHPS and start following us for occasional updates. Having done that, mention us on FollowFriday, or in fact any other day of the week. Spread also the word about facebook.com/DenverRockyHorror far and wide; let’s see how many people we can pick up from Indonesia next month.

Seriously. Because how cool would it be to get a measurable number of fans and followers for this thing. Maybe we can get Utah to declare a civil war against us. Like, more officially.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that my DigiCam’s been sucking, since it’s eight years old. So I gave up and left it at home. Probably, Peter got some decent shots through the course of the night. Personally, having grabbed a Motorola Droid with a 5MP PhoneCam in it the other day, I gave that a bit of a testrun too.

That didn’t work remarkably well. It may be five megapixels, but it’s still fundamentally a PhoneCam. So a fair percentage of those five million pixels per shot are a bit blurred. Still, they’re uploaded and available in the entry below.

It could have been worse; it just also coulda been better. On the subject: I tried getting some video too; that wasn’t better; I’m not even bothering to upload it.

What did work out was posting to twitter.com/DenverRHPS in realtime. At least until I ran out of realtime and had to get back to getting shots with the phone. I should have been able to tweet up images as I was getting them too, but something jammed up and kept whimpering that I couldn’t upload images while uploads were in progress…not that they apparently were. So that’s something to figure out before the next show, in June.

Looking at DenverRockyHorror.com on a phone with a screen the size of a playingcard, for both sorrow and pain at once, I’m kinda thinking toward a mobile version of the site. Technologically, that’s easy enough to set up: tell the server to peek at the browser and screenmode and whatever, and as needed replace the theme with a smaller, simpler version. What I’m not sure about yet is what a smaller, simpler version should look like; that’s something to ponder a bit. Meanwhile, if you’re on a Droid or an iPhone or whatever mobile browser, you probably already know how to zoom in and scroll around to read this text at more than a millimetre in height. It sucks to have to do that, I know; but, as of this writing, you kinda have to do that. At least until I work out a serverside bugfix, making this whole paragraph kinda meaningless.

So, let’s talk about June.

The show being monthly, always on the final Friday, themenights haven’t been happening lately. And that’s something of a pity. So, by popular demand, June’s show gets to be a themenight. And, since it’s by popular demand, the theme is the ever popular Bondage Night.

How Bondage Night Works:

1. Show up wearing electrical tape or less.
2. ???
3. Profit.

Okay, so it’s a little more complex than that. And arguably a bit negotiable. But think of it as Halloween, in June, with a general leather&rope motif. Handcuffs encouraged. Slavetrading overlooked, at least until someone calls in Amnesty International. That sort of thing. And, if you see someone calling Amnesty International: capture him and whip him into submission; no one likes a spoilsport.

At a guess, as we move through June, toward the twenty-fifth, someone’ll set up a Bondage HowTo on the messageboard to help those who aren’t professional LatexGimps with shopping and arranging and learning to cry gracefully and whatever; keep an eye out for that.
